Who We Are
Monica Alfaro
Welling
Monica Alfaro Welling is Managing Partner
and co-founder of Strategic Links, Inc.
Ms Welling has over 18 years of experience
in strategic planning and marketing in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology,
and medical devices. Her unique career in the life science industry has
allowed her to touch every aspect of the development and
commercialization process of early and late stage development products
and new therapeutic applications. In addition, Ms. Welling has experience
launching products, medical devices, and new product indications, both
domestically and internationally.
Prior to co-founding Strategic Links, Ms
Welling served as Senior Vice President for Hythiam, Inc., an early stage
company focusing on the medical treatment of addiction. She was a
corporate officer and member of the Executive Leadership Team, overseeing
all of the company’s marketing, planning, and strategic operations.
While there, Ms. Welling supported several
rounds of fund raising, and developed and implemented the commercial
platform for the company. This resulted in the roll-out of a robust data
package plan, an innovative strategy to create initial awareness and
early adoption, and an infrastructure to support company growth. Largely
as a result of her initiatives and management, the company grew to a
market cap of $350M in less than 3 years.
In addition to her experience at Hythiam, Ms
Welling held senior level positions at Novo Nordisk and Allergan. She was
the first commercial person to manage a drug and device development
program during her tenure with Novo Nordisk, and she created several best
practices to manage project risks and ensure cross-functional management
buy-in, which was implemented throughout the company. At Allergan, she
led the commercial development of new medical therapeutic areas for
BOTOX, one of the most successful pharmaceutical brands ever to be
marketed in the USA. These strategies and initiatives resulted in
significant expansion of its use in the medical community.
Ms Welling is a commercial advisor for
Zacharon Pharmaceuticals Inc., an advisor for the NIH SBIR/STTR CAP grant
program, a commercial reviewer for the NSF SBIR/STTR Phase I/II program
and NCI SBIR Bridge Program, and on the screening committee for the
SoCalBio Investor Conference program. She has a Masters in Business
Administration from Odense University in Denmark as well as a Bachelor of
Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the
University of California, Irvine.
Jane A Hart
Jane Hart is Senior Executive Partner and
co-founder of Strategic Links, Inc.
Prior to co-founding Strategic Links, Ms
Hart held the position of Vice President of National Accounts and
Licensing at Hythiam, Inc., an early stage company focusing on the
medical treatment of addiction. In this role, she was responsible for the
strategic analysis and design of the sales organization, business
development which targeted partnerships with health care providers and
institutions, and licensing and contracting activities. Based on her
analysis and the execution of her strategies, the company reorganized the
sales organization, revised the target customer criteria, and refined the
role of business development. This resulted in more productive accounts,
faster acquisition of contracts, and the highest sales the company had
achieved in its short history.
Ms Hart has also held senior management
positions with Zeneca (Astra Zeneca), Roche Laboratories, and Sanofi
(Sanofi-Aventis). As a leader in her field, she was one of the first
women in the United States to lead a national sales organization. Ms Hart
has repeatedly demonstrated her skill in developing creative new
strategies to deal with challenges faced in health care marketing. One
notable example was the development and execution of the first major
program to combat generic penetration for a leading branded
pharmaceutical product, which resulted in brand retention significantly
longer than other products losing patent, at the time.
Ms Hart has over 20 years of experience in
sales, marketing, business development, and management in pharmaceuticals
and health care services. She has extensive experience developing
strategic selling solutions for multiple payer audiences, as well as
experience in licensing, contracting, and other commercial aspects of the
healthcare industry.
Ms Hart serves on the Board of Directors of
Medrisk, Inc., the leading claims management and medical services company
in the workman’s compensation area. She received a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania and she holds Bachelors of Science and Art in
Education and French Literature, respectively.
